What are some of the barriers that get in the way of us giving sadaqah? What are some of the barriers, like what stops us from giving sadaqah? We say to ourselves all the time, “Oh, if I give money, my money will decrease.” Okay, well, based on what the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, that’s incorrect. That’s incorrect because he said explicitly and clearly, he said, “Charity does not decrease wealth.” Simple as that. Charity, sadaqah, does not decrease your wealth. Why is that? If I have $10 and I give a dollar, I have $9 left. So how is the Prophet, peace be upon him, saying that my money is not reduced? My money is now $9, not $10. I just gave away a dollar.
The answer… is barakah.
Barakah is the blessings that Allah places in something so that it will have success, or abundance. If you remove barakah, if there’s no barakah in something, there’s no success, there’s no abundance in that. So the point is, if you have $10 and you give a dollar, or you have $100 and you give $10, yes, you have less money. But Allah blesses it, you have barakah in that. And if you have barakah, what happens? That wealth will increase. No, it’s not going to increase in front of you. That $9 is not going to magically multiply into $10 and $100. No. But in the unseen world, the barakah comes down.
Yesterday we were almost in a serious car accident. So me and Mom were in a car driving, and out of nowhere, a car came out in front of us, and I had to slam on the brakes, and the car was skidding on the road. We were headed right towards the car, and Alhamdulillah, I was able to turn the wheel and the car turned and just missed the car in front of us that pulled out in front of us. And we stopped, and we were just in shock. We were like, “What just happened?” That may have been barakah that Allah sent down barakah to us to prevent us from getting into a serious car accident, where we could have sustained serious injuries. Maybe we could have died. Maybe we could have lost the ability to walk or to see. Maybe the windshield cracked and got into our face and we lost our eyes. Nothing happened. We just kept driving. We’re like, “Alhamdulillah,” and we just kept driving. What a blessing! What a blessing! Maybe it was because we gave sadaqah. Maybe it was because I volunteered a little bit of time to give to the masjid or to pick up that trash or to remove that harmful thing from the road. We don’t know. Maybe Allah sent down that barakah in place of that dollar that I gave, in place of that $10 that I gave. And how much did I get in return? I got priceless amounts of barakah back in return, priceless! Because I could have ended up—me and Mom could have ended up dead or maybe in the hospital. And how many thousands of dollars we would have had to spend on the bills, the medical bills, and the pain and the suffering, and the damage to our car? All of that was relieved from us, maybe because Allah gave us some barakah. And maybe because of something that we did in the past that we just completely lost track of. Maybe it happened a year ago or 10 years ago or we don’t know. Everything is in Allah’s account. “Not a leaf falls but is in the record of Allah. Not a leaf falls but is in the record of Allah.”
Anyways, guys, I just want you to have this impact on your heart. You know, you guys haven’t experienced a lot in life because you’re young. You know, we’ve gone through so many things in life where we see the blessings of Allah every single day. And it’s those moments in your life when you have these impactful moments, where a car pulls out in front of you, you know, and you realize how blessed you are. That could have changed our life. That really could have changed our life. Don’t think it’s insignificant, these, these things that happen. You know, every single penny that you give, every single moment that you give to the masjid, every single piece of trash that you pick up, you know, there are blessings there, there are blessings in it. And you never know when, when that blessing is going to come back to benefit you. Yes, Inshallah, it will come in the Hereafter. But also, Inshallah, it will come in this life. And I really feel like that yesterday, when we almost got into that car accident, it’s only by the grace of Allah that He saved us, that He prevented anything. Nothing happened, which was a miracle. I really look at it as a small, I really look at it as a small miracle that nothing happened. Even the fact that I turned the wheel and I we were able to avoid the car, I thought that maybe even turning the wheel as it was happening, I thought that we would have fishtailed. You know what fishtail means? It means the back of the car would have swerved to the side because we were going so fast and I slammed on the brakes and I turned the wheel. And usually when that happens, the back of the car swings to the side and spins around to the front. So I thought that that was going to happen. That didn’t even happen. Such a blessing!
So what I’m saying is that never underestimate that what you give in sadaqah could come back to you in a different form than what you expect. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” Maybe me and your mother were prevented from getting into a serious car accident, a calamity, because maybe of a charity or a good deed or an act of service that we did months ago or years ago or maybe just the other day! We don’t know. Everything is in His account. Again, you give that money out of your hand, you see it reducing, but the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Wealth is never diminished with sadaqah.” It’s never diminished with sadaqah, because you get so much in return! And it may not be money that comes back your way. It’ll be blessings that Allah saves you from calamity, or Allah blesses you with children, or Allah blesses you with a wonderful spouse. How priceless is that? Or Allah blesses you with a wonderful job, a job that you’re content with, that you love going to every single day. How many times do how many times do we hear stories of people going to jobs that they hate? They have to drive and go work 8 hours every day, 40 hours a week, to a job that they can’t stand, and they develop cancer as a result of that because they have such, you know, disdain for their job, and they don’t realize how much effect that’s having on their on their mental and their physical health. Count the blessings of having a wonderful job, count the blessings of having a roof over your head, count the blessings of having a wonderful spouse, wonderful children, contentment in your heart. You know, contentment is a blessing from Allah. That’s a blessing from Allah to have contentment, that when you’re facing difficulties, that you’re content. You believe this is from Allah, this is Allah’s will. I believe in the, I believe that that this is all meant to be. That’s a blessing. If Allah gives you that blessing, it’s priceless. It’s more than money, more than a million dollars. Beautiful contentment. So if you’ve given sadaqah, you give a little bit of money, you give a little bit of your time, maybe Allah gives you contentment in your heart. That’s priceless. Priceless.
